This historically important American Almanac / Pamphlet is titled in full “Vol. 2 No. 1 'Go Ahead!!' - Davy Crockett’s Almanack of Wild Sports in the West, And Life In the Backwoods. Calculated for All of the States in the Union. 1836. “Published by The Author” (actually published by Ben Harding) in Nashville, Tennessee. The Almanac measures approx. 4 3/4” by 7 3/4” and originally contained 36 pages the issue offered here lacks the front cover and the top half of the second page and well as the final two pages.
This is the second Annual Edition of the Davy Crockett Almanac and as with all of these wonderful Publications it is profusely illustrated with part page , comic wood engraved illustrations of many amazing and fantastical Adventures of Colonel Crockett and his Tennessee Associates. Besides the usual 12 pages of monthly Almanac information, this classic Almanac is a lesson in creative folklore.
Grolier's American One Hundred states: "It was the Crockett Almanacks which made Crockett a legendary figure and a part of American folklore.... Rourke, Crockett's biographer, observes that the legendary Crockett stories 'constitute one of the earliest and perhaps the largest in our cycles of myth, and they are part of a lineage that endures to this day, in Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Ozark Mountains.”
The Almanac includes 23 fantastic part page comic illustrations, Without a doubt the Crockett Almanac’s are among the most important works of American Literature and did much to create the Mythology of the Western Hero.
Crockett Almanacs are VERY rare and most are held in Institutional Collections - most of the early Ben Harding Almanacs are represented by only a handful of existent copies and we have been unable to find any recent sales record for the Crockett Almanac of 1836 – at the present time only one original Crockett Almanac is being offered for sale – a well known Antiquarian Bookseller’s catalog includes a copy of the 1840 Crockett Almanac priced between $4000.00 - $6,000.00.
Unfortunately this fascinating and historically important Crockett Almanac is in poor condition. As stated above the Almanac is incomplete lacking the front cover and the top half of the second page and well as the final two pages. Many of the remaining leaves have full or partial, central, horizontal tears as well as edge wear, edge chips and staining. Other than the second leaf, the damage does not result in text or illustration loss. The rarity and importance of this 1836 Davy Crockett Almanac caused to offer it here in this incomplete condition in the hopes that a knowledgeable Collector will be interested in preserving it for posterity. A dealer stamp is on inside page.
